  1. TYT TH-9800 4 Star Review

Posted by on 13th May 2018

I'm so glad I took Joe's advice on the Internet and purchased this radio from MTC. MTC shipped it fast and answered several of my questions while I was deciding what radio to finally select. Thank you MTC! The TH-9800 is an amazing radio for the price. So far I have tested the 2m and the 70 cm bands with no problems to report. The built-in speaker is clear and loud. I especially love the fact that I can listen to the Air Band (for my local airport) and monitor the FRRS, GMRS and CBRS bands. You do need a license to transmit on the GMRS band and a radio that is certified to be used in that band. However, this radio can transmit on both the CBRS, FRRS and GMRS bands in the event of emergency. You can use the CHIRP software and the included TYT UART USB cable so long as you download and install the appropriate Windows 10 for the UART (that is the serial com port) driver. The cable is not strictly speaking a USB cable. It is instead a UART with a USB interface cable that allows you to send and receive serial data to and from the radio. Learning to program the radio took some time but it was well worth the investment. I've yet to test the HF bands for lack of the appropriate 6m/10m antenna. However, based on my experience with 2m and 70 cm bands I expect no problems as well. In short I'm impressed with the radio and can recommend it.

  2. Easy to set up and use 5 Star Review

Posted by on 11th May 2018

This is my first amateur radio, so I was a bit apprehensive about setting it up. Found that the setup and programming process was relatively easy and I've been active on a couple of nets to practice my new hobby. I consistently get positive feedback regarding the strength and clarity of my signal. I also find the scanner function of this radio to be quite handy. As a new Ham I have much to learn, but this unit appears to be just the ticket for someone like me. It has lots of features, but it's relatively easy to use.

what a great deal mtc did a great job shipping quickly now as far as the radio. great package deal at that price I'm not great at computers and programming and it does come with the software and cables please remember to download the drivers for the cable its located on the mtc download section this is very important and I found that it wont auto load offsets so I switched to chirp and that solved that issue the other problem was every time you upload to the radio it resets the memory to numeric instead of alfa tag so you have to select each mem ch and push and hold the low button to display alfa and its good until you upload a new memory (not sure if the yaesu has the same issue )another problem is the mic the cord is wired direct to the mic would have been nice to have a plug there so as to make it easier to run a new cord now the good its a solid rig well built receives good and sound good crossband works well and rig stays cool I can compare it to my kenwood v71a and its very similar in size and it fit right into the mount perfectly and the same power cable very convenient my on air test were great as far as audio goes getting great feedback so from people and after 3 days of heavy use its running better then I expected now people are asking where I got it and are starting to order it (the same people that said it would be junk by the way)I'm not going to get into tec specs about the rig because that's beyond my scope but I can tell you that the rig is preforming well and I couldn't be happier with it at this point mtc had the best pricing and shipped quickly and I will send people their way ill try to give an update on the rig in a few months (for the sceptics) but so far I feel the radio has the best bang for the buck is it for everyone maybe not but its hard to find a better rig in that price point 73 guys kb1osy

  5. One easy to use Radio 5 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Dec 2017

Purchased the TYT TH-9800 but was a bit hesitant. I wasn't familiar with the TYT brand. Once I got on the air and tried it out I found it very easy to setup and use. Also, I'm getting excellent audio reports. A truly great radio with all the capability needed to make quality contacts. Looking forward to trying this rig on 6 meters.

I think Yaesu has some fierce competition with this radio - it is super clear and range is great.
