 ULTRA COMPACT DESIGN

Measuring 6.1” x 2.0” x 8.6” (155 x 52 x 218 mm), The FT-891 is an innovative Multi-band, Multi-mode Mobile/Portable transceiver with Ultra Compact and rugged case design.

100 Watts Reliable High Power Output

The FT-891 provides stable 100W (25W AM) high power output. High reliability is assured by the transmitter careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically-controlled Dual internal fans and the diecast chassis.

IF DSP provides effective and optimized QRM rejection

The 32 bit high speed floating Point DSP (max 3000 MIPS) provides effective cancellation/reduction (DNR) of the random noise that is frequently frustrating in the HF frequencies. Also: the AUTO NOTCH (DNF) automatically eliminates the dominant beat tone. The CONTOUR, and the APF, are very effective receiver noise reduction tools in the HF bands operations. The YAESU original DSP QRM and noise reduction functions are provided.

Automatic-Matching Automatic-Matching 100 Memory Antenna Tuner (Option)

The FC-50 is a microprocessor-controlled antenna tuner that is designed specifically for the FT-891. The FC-50 can be easily coupled with the FT-891.

  1. Love the radio 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Dec 2019

I was looking for a portable radio to take camping and for Park on the Air and thought this would be a great radio for that. I was right! I am still learning all the features but so far it has more than met my expectations.
Also great service from Main Trading Company. They had the best price and the radio arrived. in just a few days!

  2. Happy with FT 891 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Aug 2019

The FT 891 is as other revues that I read described.

Menu driven seems to be the biggest complaint so I recommend you spend some free time watching Youtubes about how to set the radio up and how the menus work. By not doing this you are trying to work with a complicated machine with no knowledge. Guaranteed frustration.

I learned this way with the radio on by my side and repeated the activity as I watched. This worked well for me.

I downloaded the advanced manual PDF. Copied only the set of instructions that were of interest and had them printed from a FedEx location. 8.5X11 paper, 2 pages to a side, double sided. They were printed so that when assembled the were in book form and I only needed to fold each page once in the center. I now have a manual that I can mark up freely without many things I am not interested in.

My prior portable is a Kenwood TS 130. Twice the size or more in volume, 4X the knobs and buttons but not the ease of mounting in a car. Also heavier.

The radio is a modern portable HF rig with the necessary compromises for functionality and modern performance expectations.

I installed FLRig and set the CAT interface up and connected to one computer for CAT control. I installed Google remote desktop on the computer attached to the radio. Installed Google Remote desktop on another computer and I could control the radio from either computer. Not difficult but did take a little time.

I tried loading samples of fee based software but for me the functionality was not significantly different enough for me and this radio to warrent buying it.

Have not had much time to use this in the field but really like its size and weight and to 100 watt output capability.

I am happy I have it and happy with all my dealings with Main Trading

  3. Almost Perfect! 4 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Nov 2017

OK... I will say - up front - this is a small rig meant to be used portable/mobile. Because of that, it is necessary to bury many of the functions behind menus. There is simply not enough room on the front panel to place a 'button' for all the features. That said, Yaesu did a great job designing the radio with 'buttons' to access many of the most important features, and made 3 of the 'buttons' assignable to your favorite functions. After spending about a week with this radio, I can honestly say it is a wonderful radio, and is very easy to use. I have it set up the way I like it. The DSP noise reduction is AMAZING. Quite honestly, I had read many, many reviews of this radio prior to my purchase, and I do not understand many of the "criticisms" of some of the features. Some people are just too picky... or don't understand the features they criticize. I love the 891. It replaced a Yaesu FT-857D, and I am VERY glad I made the change. This radio does not have the VHF/UHF... but who cares? I have a radio dedicated to those. I especially love the larger display on the 891...better for my old eyes! I love my new FT-891, and you will love yours, too!

  4. Great Small Rig 4 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Nov 2017

I like the FT-891 audio with the stock mic with the processor on and set correctly. Great size to carry portable! The display is very visible! Menu's are not hard to get to, but I do believe it could be a easier way to switch modes! Not bad if you using as myself in the field, but changing modes mobile would be a issue!
