CTCSS and DCS Encode/Decode Built In
For easy repeater access, or silent monitoring of busy channels, both CTCSS and DCS (Digital Code Squelch) Encoder/Decoder circuits are built in. CTCSS and DCS configuration data may be stored independently in each memory channel. A “Split Tone” mode also allows operation on systems where CTCSS and DCS are used separately on the repeater uplink/downlink.
Extensive Memory System
The FT-2980R provides a total of 221 memory channels, including 200 “regular” memories, ten pairs of band-limit memories, and an instant-recall “Home” channel you can dedicate to a frequently-used repeater or simplex frequency. Memories can store repeater shift information, CTCSS/DCS data, power output level, scanning status (“Skip”), and Alpha-Numeric labels.
Alpha-Numeric Channel Display
Memory channels may be displayed either with the channel frequency or a personalized Alpha-Numeric label, for easy channel recognition. Up to six letters, characters, or numbers may be used for labeling channels.
WIRES Internet Linking Access Feature
The FT-2980R includes a conveniently-located “Internet” key, for quick access to Internet-linked repeater systems. Internet repeater linking allows you to use your FT-2980R to talk to other Amateurs throughout the world, with outstanding voice signal quality. The “Internet” key may be configured to send either a single DTMF digit, or a DTMF string, for operation on a WIRES™ (Wide-Coverage Internet Repeater Enhancement System) repeater, or on other Internet-linked repeaters using DTMF tone access. For more information on WIRES™, please visit our Web site (www.yaesu.com)

  3. Top of the line 5 Star Review

Posted by on 16th Nov 2018

There's no fan for the 80 watts but the heat sink never gets very warm so the fan isn't needed. For the money this is the best deal for performance, very easy to program if you follow directions also has a CW trainer which is kinda fun .

  4. Good little portable VHF 5 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Jan 2018

I have been extremely pleased with this little rig. I was debating whether to get this one, the Yaesu 65 watt job, or the Kenwood 281A 65 watter. I think I made the right call. I don't think the Kenwood comes with the mounting brackets or fused power cord, hence the cheaper price on this website.

The extra watts (it has 4 power settings) is worth the extra 20 bucks. Very good reception and range. Extremely easy to program, though I did have to consult the manual a few times. I honestly don't think you need the RT programming cable unless you are just a complete neophyte.

I like the ruggedness of this model. I think you could about throw this thing off a roof and the little beast would still work. I actually dropped it on the floor when I was opening it up out of the box and did not seem to phase it a bit.

The trade off however is that the speaker is on the top, not the front. That's about my only knock. Luckily the volume is substantial, so that's not a big issue, but if you are going to mount it in your truck and you have a loud engine, it might create a slight hearing issue, but you can either patch it into car speakers or just crank it up. I have not had an issue.

I think this is a really good, rugged all around portable two meter. Be sure to order an antenna if you don't have one, and it's ready to go out of the box with a power supply.

  5. Great little radio 5 Star Review

  7. Great radio 5 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Jan 2018

I had the earlier version. I used it in my E150 van mobile.
It served me fine. The extra power was a Big help and extended the range over my 50 watt 2 meter way more then mere numbers would indicate.
The best part of this rig is the 4 power levels.
    They are very useful.
    5 watts 10 watts 30watts and Yes 80watts.
If you decide to use 2 meter amp with this radio mobile with an internal preamp to get the most of mobile operations then just program all your memories with no more then 30watts of drive. Most 2 meter do very well driven at 30watts.
Then you have ouputs of 5watts to 170 watts with a
TE System amp. This will make your mobile experience with 2 meters FM all the more fun. Enough power to offset the more noise we are getting these days when mobile on 2 meter.
The man made RFI is worse than ever.
    I really like this radio!

  8. Lots O' Power for Less Money 5 Star Review

Posted by on 5th Dec 2017

Up to 80 watts to reach out and touch someone! Hard to beat for the price point. Simple, no-frills 2-Meter for home or on the road. Large display, well lit, easy to read. Menu has many options & is easy to use after familiarization. Seems to be built like a brick house. No fan so it will get warm w/ high use on 80w. It's basically a FT-2900R

  9. Yaesu FT-2980 operation 5 Star Review

The Yaesu FT-2980R is a radio that is dependable and easy to operate. If you take the time to read thru the well written manual the set up and programing is easy.

  10. FT-2980R 5 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Dec 2017

Just picked a New FT-2980R. And this Rig is operating "Superb" and already doing very great on the performance and the extra power. First it has more rejection than the FT-2900 and then when I put it on the Digital Power Meter it does a little over 5.4 Watts on the 1st power mode. The second it does about 10.5. The third mode it does about 34.8 watts and last but not least on the forth power mode. I saw it flash right at 90 Watts then I usually ran about 89.9. I would recommend one of these to anyone who is a serious Two Meter Operator! Which is Fantastic for a Two Meter Radio. I also want to THANK Mr.Richard of MTC and his Team for their wonderful service and support. (THE BEST). And would want to Wish EVERYONE A HAPPY AND BLESSED CHRISTMAS!
