  1. Best 2M transceiver out there 5 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Apr 2018

The TM-281A is my first Kenwood transceiver and I must say, this is already my favorite ham radio I've ever used compared to all the others before it. It comes with a great mic and is very ruggedly built. I highly recommend it.

The front facing speaker is a plus. I programmed my local and club repeaters in minutes using a USB programming cable available separately. Also the only 2M radio with a actual S meter display I've ever used.

I plan on the purchase of a second unit soon for my other vehicle to replace a Chinese radio.

  2. An Inexpensive Radio with Real Power 5 Star Review

Posted by on 22nd Mar 2018

I'm not a UHF operator and I don't do nets all over the place so this radio fit my needs perfectly. Audio reports are top notch and the front firing speaker is really great.

I also want to give props to MTC for price, speed of processing and delivery. This was my first order with them and I will be back.

  3. unbeatable for the money 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Mar 2018

I have owned a TM-271A for about 7 years and am well pleased with it and this radio is no different. Super easy to program, great audio, simple and rugged. Tough to beat if you only need a single band radio and for the price it's almost worth buying an extra to have a spare setting around. NOAA weather channels and weather alert, front firing speaker and easy to program with no software if you so choose.

  4. Great radio, small package. 5 Star Review

This my second purchase of this model radio because of such great serviceability from my first. My other radio is mounted in my buggy and has really taken a beating because of the terrain and constantly in the weather. Takes a beating and keeps on working! MTC is also great to work with because of good & timely customer service!

  7. great little radio for the price! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Feb 2016

Kenwood's great sound and very good output of 65 watts! Channels are easy to program into the unit. I don't have the programming cable and software. Don't guess I will bother with spending the money. I'm using a little Tram mag mount antenna and I can easily talk 30-40 miles. Just depends upon where I am mobile, of course.

Kenwood is known for quality and this radio is no exception. I am sure I will get many years of service out of this rig.

  10. Very inexpensive, but not so easy to use 4 Star Review

Posted by on 15th Jan 2015

I purchased mine to use while my TS-2000 rig goes off for an overhaul (or burial - TBD). I intended to program it using the programming cable for all my other Kenwood radios, but NO. It seems they figured out how to sucker you into a very inexpensive radio which requires an outlandishly expensive programming cable (half the cost of the radio itself!). So, I resolved to program the radio from the radio directly. It took me 75 minutes to figure out how to program the "enter" key. Really? They couldn't include a hardware "enter" key? The menu branch for setting repeater tones is far removed from all the other settings, so programming repeaters is tedious, at best. Since mine sits on a tabletop, it takes two hands and 6-7 keystrokes just to change power output, and unlike a competing brand I used years ago, does not remember power settings with memory. Changing frequencies in VFO requires a keypress on the rig, and then keypresses on the mic. You cannot do it all from the mic. Go figure. Speaking of the mic, they just had to change the mic so I can't use the TS-2000/TM-D700 mic hook. Why? On the positive side, I do get great signal reports, even when dxing simplex. Plus, unlike another brand, Kenwood will stand behind their warranty, should that be necessary. It is why I now only buy Kenwoods.
