  1. IC-7300...Not much more to add. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Aug 2019

This was my second Icom IC-7300, intended to operate SO2R contesting. Best bargain in ham radio, hands down. Purchased during an MTC Crazy Deal...best price around. Very satisfied with the transaction.

  2. Good quality Uniden FRS/GMRS radios 4 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Nov 2018

I was surprised MTC was almost giving these away at the Crazy Deals price. I received a pair of Uniden walkie talkies in original sealed packaging. The package claim was "30 mile" range, but such marketing claims must always be taken with a grain of salt. Actual distance inside a residential area is only 3-4 miles. Still a serviceable and respectable distance.

    The Good:
    * Solid feel in the hand
    * Plenty LOUD to overcome ambient or background noise
    * Easy menu operation
    * The charger provided had two cords attached so you could charge both radios at the same time, a nice touch
    * Headphone/mikes were included, not optional
    * Battery use is easily 4-6 hours of operation
    * They can stand up by themselves and not fall over, they don't need to be in the charging cradle for them to stand up
    * Came with AA rechargeable batteries, and regular AA batteries could be used if needed
    * Higher capacity AA batteries could be substituted for even longer battery life
    * The choice to use AA batteries instead of AAA means extended battery life
    * Uses USB micro connection for charging, so even if you don't have the original charger handy, any cell phone charger will work, a great feature if you forgot the original charger at home

    The not so good:
    * Scan speed is pretty slow, you could miss a short call
    * Once the belt clip is installed it takes some dexterity or a small screwdriver to remove it again
    * PTT button is quite small, and could be made a little larger for smaller hands to operate
    * Although it is a common marketing ploy, Uniden advertises 121 'privacy' codes. The codes don't actually provide any privacy, everyone else with an FRS/GMRS radio can hear your conversations. The 'privacy' codes only eliminate the tedium of listening to all other users on the channel, except the ones using the same code. I know this is semantics but users should not expect any kind of privacy when using these devices
    * The USB charging port on top is very tight, I was afraid of doing damage when inserting the charging cord. Be very careful and gentle here.

All in all, a very good value. Thanks MTC!

  3. openspot from RF Shark rocks 5 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Mar 2018

I purchased my second openspot from RF Shark and it really makes enjoying DMR much easier. No hassle about updating DMR Repeater information in your device. Just program what you what when you want it and enjoy! It took about 10 minutes to setup.

  4. UV-82 Mislabels 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Feb 2018

While many folks are not keen on the Baofeng radio, I've found them to be an inexpensive way to get into the hobby as a newbie. They make good "entry-level" radios for new Technicians for a minimal investment. I use the RT Systems programmer and so by the time they get into the hands of the new Tech, they're programmed and ready to go. The '82 comes with everything needed to get started in our fun and educational hobby!
