Having Trouble with the drivers for the cable? Thanks to John, Here is some helpful info

The USB to Serial programming cable uses a Prolific Chip.

These chips were counterfeited in China and used in ‘cloned’ programming cables.

Most of these come from China and from eBay.

To discourage their use, Prolific changed their Windows Drivers to recognize a counterfeit chip.

When a cloned USB cable is plugged in, the new driver sees it and immediately Fails.
The work around is to load an older Windows Driver.

The recommended driver is Prolific 3.2.0.0.    Nothing Newer.

The entire procedure for this is described at http://www.miklor.com/uv5r

in the USB Cable Drivers section.  http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Drivers.html

It shows the step by step procedure with graphics.

Feel free to give this link to Anyone having the issue.

It will cure the problem and you’ll be the Hero of the Day.

Trust me, Many UV5R users have this issue.

  1. Not Bad For the price

Posted by Unknown on 30th Jul 2013

The E5 is a little clunky but has most the typical features of other entry level radios. We use these in high damage areas and keep a supply on hand for disaster response teams. The price continues to drop on these radios so you get what you pay for. I prefer the Wouxuns but as long as you know these are disposable and can tolerate a little programming pain then they might just fit the bill.

  2. Big perfomance for a little price

Posted by Frank L. Davis on 10th Jul 2013

This radio is wonderful for our organizational needs at a price our non-profit can afford.
5 Watts of power and dual band coverage is certainly not available at this price anywhere else, even the online used equipment sites.

  3. nice

Posted by Wayne on 2nd Jul 2013

very nice little radio and a bargain. MTC is a great company to do business with.

  4. Great Radio For The Money

Posted by Unknown on 27th Jun 2013

Good radio small but not to small, plan on getting
    more soon.

  5. Solid build case but non standard speaker port and weak manual

Posted by Unknown on 27th Jun 2013

Given this is made in China and the instructions need to be expanded. Tried programming a repeater and no help from the manual. I had to go to the internet to figure out how to do it. The speaker port is 2.5mm not a 3.5mm. Speaker is clear and loud. Battery charging has to be only in the drop charger no external power port, but it does come with a 1800 milliamp battery.
Get the programming cable and software.

  6. Solid Radio

    Posted by KF5VSP on 27th Jun 2013

I bought this HT for local use, and monitoring.

I am very pleased with its transmit distance, and reception.I did purchase the antenna upgrade
which really improves the Rx, and Tx.It accomplishes what I need it for. Can't go wrong here.

  7. New to Ham Radio and this was a great starter rig

Posted by Keith Bilbrey - KF5SAT on 19th Jun 2013

I bought this rig from MTC a few weeks after getting my ticket. I listened for a while with the included antennae and even managed to make a few contacts. I switched over to magnetic mount for my car and extended my range. Didn't have an issue programming the rig, and have really enjoyed using it.
